Switching from physical to digital products, such as NFTs, selling social media accounts, and getting paid to post on YouTube and Instagram were unimaginable just a decade or so ago. As digital marketing is a relatively new field, there is very little formal education and a few degrees that you can earn to start working in the digital marketing sphere. A common career path to digital marketing involves getting an MBA degree, although even this is not necessary at all times. The truth is that most digital marketing agencies provide their training. A specific skill set may be all you need to ensure you get accepted into a digital marketing agency. 

Why not get a marketing degree? 

The thing is that the field of digital marketing is both new and developing fast. In reality, the knowledge you get as a part of your digital marketing degree is purely theoretical, and besides some practical, in-field work, many digital marketing degree owners decide to establish their digital marketing agencies and try their entrepreneurial spirit. This also allows for experimentation and further development in the field. 

Besides this, there are other reasons you may not want to pursue a digital marketing degree: 

  1. Digital marketing degrees are expensive – with the cost bracket of tens of thousands of dollars per year of studies, 
  2. Employers do not seek degrees – they seek experience and knowledge as well as (people) skills, 
  3. Bootcamps and online courses provide a good starting point in ensuring a good and stable career, 
  4. The developments within the digital marketing field occur simply too fast – by the time you have finished your studies, most of the knowledge will be outdated. The reality is that most Universities provide education for job positions that will be completely obsolete in a matter of decades. 

How to get a job in digital marketing with no degree? 

This should not say that getting a digital marketing job is as easy as showing up for an interview. Quite on the contrary, the skills needed are large and may differ from one employer to another.
