Whatever the reason is, you’ll need to get high SEO positioning to make your website rank higher. But what should you do, exactly? Should you write more content containing keywords? Or add more links to it?

Take stock of all the content you have that targets this particular keyword. Chances are, you can improve it without spending hours on it.
Here are several things you can do quickly for this end:
- Add a keyword in the beginning (e.g., “Mobile App Development: The Ultimate Guide”);
- Make sure it’s a long read. Well-performing content is, on average, 1,400 long, according to Backlinko;
- Repeat the keyword. Ensure your keyword reappears several times throughout the text;
- Add LSI (contextual) keywords. You can find them using tools like LSIGraph;
- Check for keyword cannibalization. Make sure your pages don’t compete for the same ranking;
- Consider users’ search intent. What kind of content do they want to see when they type this or that keyword into a search?
Build your backlink authority
The more external websites refer to your page, the more trustworthy it’s deemed by Google. So, it ranks higher in the search results – according to Ahrefs research, there’s a clear correlation between the two indicators.
So, you need to review how many domains refer to your website. Then, compare it with the pages that rank higher than yours. If it’s clear you’re lagging behind in this regard, it’s time to do some link-building.
How do you go about it? Here are three rules you should keep in mind, first:
- High-authority domains have more weight than no-name ones;
- The referring domain has to be relevant to your content;
- The link to your website should appear in the body, not the footer or sidebar.
And here are some of the ways you can increase the number of referring domains:
- Guest posting;
- Creating one-of-a-kind content that others will want to link to (most often, it’s original research or visuals);
- Adding your link to resource pages (pages with useful links);
- Leaving a link in the comments;
- Asking to link a mention of your brand that’s already in the text;
- Offering a link exchange to another website.

In most cases, technical SEO isn’t the issue that prevents you from scoring high. But sometimes, it can be a factor. So, don’t overlook it – go to your page and check it for:

If Google sees that people visit your website and then immediately return to the search results, it considers your website uninteresting for them. If they don’t go looking around your website and don’t do anything else (like fill out a form), in their opinion, it doesn’t match their search intent.
But how do you improve the bounce rate? There’s no one sure-proof way to do it – it all depends on why users bounce. But here are the three most common issues you can try to fix:
- What users see when they open the page (“the first screen”) doesn’t hook them;
- There’s no table of content on the page;
- There are no visuals, charts, or interactive elements.
Pay attention to content quality
Finally, you can’t hope to get a higher ranking if your content doesn’t come with a high added value for the users. If your blog posts are just average, “one of the many,” you’ll have issues with every aspect of search engine optimization:
- You’ll get very few (if any) high-quality backlinks;
- You won’t be able to get people to link to it or negotiate guest posting or link exchange;
- You won’t manage to bring down your bounce rate.
But how do you make sure you have quality content on your website? Here are four characteristics of awesome content that you can use to guide you:
- It matches the search intent and your readers’ needs;
- It’s easy to read and navigate (ergo, it’s well-structured and contains lists and visuals);
- It makes your readers trust you;
- It’s relevant and up-to-date.
