How to Get Rid of Headache from Math Homework

Math assignments seem to polarize students more than anything. Some of them grasp complex concepts and theories on the go. They have no trouble with quadratic equations or other problems.

Yet, not everybody is as lucky: many learners find math homework one of the most difficult things in the world. According to Rewire, as many as 25 percent of four-year college students and 80 percent of community college students experience “math anxiety,” and there’s no reason those feelings should stop once students graduate.

Some would say that practice is the key to everything. According to Arden, Practice helps people reach their highest potential. It is a life skill that allows individuals to develop expertise in specific tasks. Many advise dividing complex subjects into simpler concepts.

Other students seem to grasp what’s being taught to them by the professor. But they struggle when solving mass problems on their own anyway. If you’re one of those learners who hate dealing with math assignments, here are a couple of things you can do to make the process smoother.

Try understanding the problem yourself

The first thing you have to do is understand the main mathematical proofs. With proper practice, you will be able to recognize and solve them at greater speed. Once you can recite them at the drop of a hat, dealing with math homework will come naturally.

Of course, not every proof can be learned fast and will need extra work, but there’s a way around it.Try approaching each problem with logic. Analyze what you did wrong or right before getting a result.

Math is a highly logical discipline and should be approached as such. The rule of thumb is to use logic when working on each assignment. After the task is done comes practice.

According to VOA learning English, 58 percent of adults in America said they enjoyed their math class experiences. Of the American adults who had good memories of their math classes, 61 percent said the main reason was because they liked the subject matter. Of the 42 percent who said they did not like their math classes, 59 percent said it was because they did not enjoy the subject matter. The study found that 62 percent of men reported liking math class, compared to 53 percent of women.

Practice the problems

Once you’ve found the solution, replicate the problem several times. This will allow you to better understand the process of solving math homework assignments.

Here’s what you can do to enhance your math skills:

  • Practice difficult problems several times before it comes naturally.
  • Save digital photographs or scans of solved problems for future use.
  • Create a folder for the best examples of your work and keep it close at hand.

This way, when a similar problem arises in the future or as a part of upcoming tests, it’ll be a cakewalk for you. Not everybody has a photographic memory, so having samples of problems comes in handy. The same principle applies to lecture materials.

Keep a record of lectures

Most students rely on their writing skills when taking notes. They can be fast with a pen or a keyboard but miss critical steps in solving a math problem.

That’s why you should ask permission to record lectures via video and/or audio means. Your smartphone or laptop makes taking notes a lot easier.

It may be beneficial if you rely on different forms of media. Many students learn better when they hear information and see visual cues.

It’s a great way to revise what you’ve learned and go over complex areas. Sometimes, there’s too much background noise, or the audio quality is lacking. In such situations, turn to other students who can share a recording of a lecture. There are also many paid and free programs for editing out the background noise. For example, Audacity can remove it from videos. This makes the lecturer’s voice more intelligible. Yet, in some cases, lectures and study materials are not enough.

Look for alternative sources of information

Modern textbooks may not be good at explaining some concepts students can encounter. When this happens, try looking for alternative educational materials.

These may have better sample assignments. Trust us; many resources provide PDF books on STEM disciplines. Check out the following:

  • PDF Drive : PDF Drive is an online PDF search engine that lets you search, preview and download PDFs. According to Investintech.com, there are over 75 million eBooks, magazines, articles, and more that are indexed and discoverable directly on PDF Drive. And it isn’t any wonder as PDF Drive offers titles under a long list of categories that include Business & Career, Art, Environment, Health & Fitness, Lifestyle, and Biography.
  • The Internet Archive : the Internet Archive is a non-profit organization that provides free public access to digital materials, including web pages, books, audio recordings, including live concerts, videos, images, and software programs.
  • The Gutenberg Project : Project Gutenberg is an online library of free electronic books, or eBooks. Project Gutenberg is a volunteer effort to digitize, archive, and distribute literary works. The mission of Project Gutenberg is: To encourage the creation and distribution of eBooks.

If you can’t pick study material that suits you, go to the college library or a used bookstore. There’s a strong chance you’ll find the right information there.

Once you’ve found the right book, approach the problem again.

Study at your pace

Learn the maximum information about the formula, theorem, or other concepts. Work at your own pace until you get a fair grasp of a solution.

During this process, mark important parts with note flags. You can later ask professors about alternative methods of solving the problems.

Use flashcards to improve the quality of learning. Give them to fellow students and have them check your knowledge from time to time. It makes information stick better in your mind.

Sometimes, pushing yourself too hard can result in failing to understand the material. Headaches are a common sign that it’s time to take a break.Get a 30 min nap, go for a walk, or exercise to clear your head.

You can also find the Pomodoro work technique to be effective. According to this technique, you divide your study time into 25 min work and 15 min rest periods. Many enjoy this format as it has them memorize things better and be more productive.

Ask for help

Even the best students sometimes face a dead end with math homework. When faced with such a situation, you can ask for help from fellow students who are well-versed in the subject.

In some cases, they can point out and explain your errors. Maybe you will find a better solution together. But sometimes teamwork is not enough. That’s when you can contact professors for help. Educators can provide study materials, videos, and PDFs that explain the problem in simple terms. They won’t give direct answers to the assignments but will nudge you in the right direction. If nothing else works for you, ask for assistance online. There are many online services, such as PaperWriter, that help solve the hardest equations. Moreover, you can make math homework easier with formula calculators and online graph makers.

Conclusion

Mathematics may seem scary to some students, especially to those who are more inclined toward humanitarian subjects. They feel unable to grasp complex ideas and concepts. But the right study materials, attitude, and professional or peer support will have students acing tests in no time.

Don’t be afraid to take the first step and remain consistent in your efforts. With plenty of resources and regular practice, you’ll notice a considerable improvement in your math skills in no time!
